The RMS Titanic, owned by the White Star Line, was the largest and luxurious ocean liner of its time. During its opening trip between Southampton and New York, it crashed into an iceberg and sank on the night of April 15th, 1912, in the icy waters in front of the coast of Newfoundland. To make the tragedy worse, many of the insufficient lifeboats were launched with far fewer passengers than they could accommodate.
