The U-2A was originally powered by Pratt & Whitney J57-P37A engines with 10,500 lbs of thrust . In 1958 , along with the upgrade to the U-2C , the engine was replaced with a J800-P-13A with 15,800 lbs of thrust. In 1959 , the intake port was enlarged to increase the amount of intake air. In 1966 , the air intake was further enlarged to accommodate the J57-P-13B engine capable of producing 17,000 pounds of thrust. In 1967 , a newly designed U-2R with greater durability and payload began test flights. In 1968, the U-2R became the standard bearer of the new U-2 series , replacing the heavily worn U-2C .
