The system belongs to the class of so-called SAM (Surface-to-Air Missile) missiles. HAWK is the acronym for “Homing All The Way Killer”.
From 1963 to 1994, HAWK units were stationed in the NATO defense belt, extending from Norway, via Denmark and Germany, to Italy and Turkey. The HAWK system was mainly used for low to medium height air targets. It served in addition to the Nike Hercules Air Target for high-level attacks. Following the phasing out of the Nike Hercules in 1988, the HAWK system operated next to the Patriot weapon system. In 2004, the HAWK system was phased out in Belgium and the Netherlands.
As far as can be checked, European hawk units never fired a rocket during a warfare. Traditionally, they were firing on the island of Crete, where a NATO practice area was located.
The AFV Club 1/35 US MIM-23 HAWK (Homing all the Way Killer) plastic model accurately recreates the real life US missile system used during the Cold War.
